Architectural organization of scientific cameras: A trend indicating an increasing pixel level integration of camera functionalities. A) (EM)CCD cameras have the simplest pixel architecture consisting of only the detector leading to higher efficiency and uniformity. (B) sCMOS cameras include the integration of electronic devices at a pixel level, leading to faster operation by trading off the photon detection efficiency and uniformity between pixels. (C) SPAD array cameras have a powerful detector, that enables the counting of single photons at high speed and make them the cameras of choice for live-cell nanoscopy.
